As it says in Pirkei Avot – The Ethics of the Fathers:
“You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.” (Chapter 2:16)
At Temple Beth Abraham we take our obligation seriously, working to help those in need, fighting for social justice, and for racial, economic, and gender equality.
Light One Candle Holiday Gift Program
Dedicate one or more nights of Chanukah to helping others. Your $25 donation buys a gift coupon (valued at $30) at All Together Now, a toy store in Tarrytown. Parents of La Asociacion de Familias Hispanas de los Tarrytown can purchase these gift coupons for $5. Light One Candle allows parents to shop for holiday gifts for their children with dignity and joy.
Everyone Counts in the Fight Against Hunger
Join us as we count the Omer – the ritual counting of the 49 days between Passover and Shavuot. Each day we collect food and tzedakah – Hebrew for “charity” - to feed the hungry in our own community. We are reminded that just as we Jews were fed manna from Heaven every day during the Exodus and decades of wandering in the desert, so too must we feed the hungry among us.
Yom Kippur Food Drive
During this holiday marked by our own fasting, we feel what it’s like to be hungry. Bring as many non-perishable food items as you can to temple over the course of the High Holidays for donation to Feeding Westchester.
Purim Pasta Collection
Bring your boxes of uncooked pasta to shake during the reading of the Megillah – the Purim story in the Book of Esther – to drown out the evil Haman’s name, while at the same time doing a mitzvah (good deed). All pasta will be collected and donated to the Community Food Pantry of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown.
Back to School Backpack Drive
Help us help our neighbors at Associacion de Familias Hispanas de los Tarrytowns (AFHT). Each fall we provide backpacks filled with all district-mandated supplies for children entering pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades throughout the Tarrytown School District whose families would otherwise not be able to afford them.
